Vegas recommendations?

dotknocker and I are planning an escapade in Vegas to celebrate her birthday this year. Neither of us has ever been. We want to "do Vegas," but we're also planning on some out-of-town exploration (driving around the desert, maybe Hoover Dam, whatever strikes our fancy).

We need advice! What are good places to stay? Where are the good deals? What show(s) should we make sure to see? Any suggestions much appreciated!
