Random question.

Why can't I get someone to pay me to be "person who knows all kinds of random stuff and knows how to find out if she doesn't"?

Hey, that's the job I want!

We refer to those people as "encyclopedic generalists" -- and I am very happy to send you at any rate a token sum in recognition of your generous help this morning -- my life wouldn't have been worth two cents if I messed up "radiometer", so perhaps, since thanks to you it is now worth those two cents, I should split them with my saviour? [grin] Seriously, my feeling is that a person with your talents really belongs in a research think tank -- have you ever looked into the RAND Corporation, for example?

I know how you feel sometimes, though I tend to go in for more specific categories...

Because the job market for reference librarians is a bit poor at the moment?

Become a librarian. :)

That's a serious answer.

Google was once seeking exactly such people for their Google Answers service (where people post a question and a price, and whoever answers it earns the fee). But I don't think they need any more. And it wasn't much of a living.

You know, Nomi does what you stated as an avocation. In fact, her webpage is http://www.asknomi.com, because she calls her service "Ask Nomi."
