We refer to those people as "encyclopedic generalists" -- and I am very happy to send you at any rate a token sum in recognition of your generous help this morning -- my life wouldn't have been worth two cents if I messed up "radiometer", so perhaps, since thanks to you it is now worth those two cents, I should split them with my saviour? [grin] Seriously, my feeling is that a person with your talents really belongs in a research think tank -- have you ever looked into the RAND Corporation, for example?
Google was once seeking exactly such people for their Google Answers service (where people post a question and a price, and whoever answers it earns the fee). But I don't think they need any more. And it wasn't much of a living.
I beleive it is called a reference librarian... but you have to also deal with all sorts of stupidity, inane question along with the truly hard... and not get paid a lot..
