Lyric meme.

Okay, it's the "guess the song" lyric meme. I'll post a lyric from each song, randomly chosen from those on my iTunes. (Semi-randomly, anyway; I have a lot of instrumental stuff, and I want to spread the lyrics out among different sources, of which I have comparatively few, so I'm not letting it be totally random.) Post your guesses in the comments. Etc. (You know the drill by now.) A couple of these are particularly nasty, but I think at least one person out there should be able to get them.

(ETA: Bolding the only unguessed ones. Clearly everyone should be giving me new music to listen to. :))

1. But the world is full of zanies and fools who don't believe in sensible rules.
2. Don't believe I ever saw him without a cocktail in his hand.
3. I want to see Tucson before it's all gone.
4. I didn't do it, but if I done it, how could you tell me that I was wrong?
5. I've been washed up and put down and told I'm no good.
6. We have waited for the time, for the truth to live, when justice will shine.
7. Spirits far above, charms aloft on high, sweep away the storms rumbling 'cross the sky
8. So if you care to find me, look to the western sky.
9. I don't have time to waste on you anymore.
10. And if I let my hair down, would that be such a crime?
11. Quand je seme a main pleine, sous le grand ciel d'hiver
12. His fingers stroke those keys and every note says "please."
13. I ain't in it for the glory of anything at all, and I sure ain't in it for the wealth.
14. Again my cursed comeliness spreads hopeless anguish and distress.
15. It's receipt to receive the receiver.

I can spot 6 of them. Do you want us to limit ourselves to 1 or 2 guesses per person?

Oops, sorry, posted mine before you posted this reply...

[identity profile] leighjen.livejournal.com 2006-06-08 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I know a few of them but I will only post one:

4. "Cell Block Tango," for the musical Chicago

[identity profile] qaqaq.livejournal.com 2006-06-08 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
8 is from the amazing "Defying Gravity" from Wicked.

12. Ahem. "New Music", from Ragtime. ;-)

[identity profile] ericberlin.livejournal.com 2006-06-08 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
1 is "Impossible" from Cinderella.

3. "Amaze Me, America," Girlyman. (One of whom was in my high school german class. :) )

4. What leighjen said.

5. Oops, I have a recording of this and can quote you all the lyrics, but don't know the title offhand... "There's been a change in my life since you came along" is the refrain.

9. "There's a Fine, Fine, Line," Avenue Q.

14. Act 1 Finale, Patience. (That one almost got me--it sounded like G&S, but not any lyric I could think of. But the context fits Patience, and now that I think about it, the lyrics fit as Grosvenor's alternate for the free-for-all. Now I feel better. :))

15: "Tis no Deceit to Deceive the Deciever," Kreg Segall. :)

jadelennox: Girlyman album cover with the band replaced by Muppets (girlyman: muppets)

on 3 -- OMG, which one? I am assuming Nate, because he speaks German.

*fangirls you*

Yes. :)

[identity profile] greenlily.livejournal.com 2006-06-08 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
cool. Kreg was in my class at Brandeis and, towards the end of our four-year hitch, got really really into LARPs--I assume that's what the song is from?

5. I'm pretty sure the title is Change In My Life. No idea who sings it, though; I know it from a cappella covers.

[identity profile] greenlily.livejournal.com 2006-06-08 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
#10 is "Consequence Free", by the disproportionately [livejournal.com profile] greenlily's-soul-saving Great Big Sea. :)

Ah, not first lines. :)

7. How Could I Ever Know, The Secret Garden.
8. Defying Gravity, Wicked
10. Consequence Free, Great Big Sea (yay!)

7. ... I don't know what I was thinking. That lines were reprised or something? I'm sure someone else will nab it. :)
clauclauclaudia: (Default)

[personal profile] clauclauclaudia 2006-06-08 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
... or I shall, since my other guesses were duplicated.

7. Come Spirit, Come Charm. (yeesh!)
jadelennox: Girlyman: "I will go down with this ' ship." (girlyman: ship)

I will leave (3) for those who are less obsessive than I am. But I am posting a hint somewhere in this comment!

[identity profile] drdemure.livejournal.com 2006-06-08 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Without looking at the answers, the only one I recognized was "Impossible", from Cinderella. I loved the Lesley Anne Warren version of that story and know all the lyrics. My parents bought me the sound track (on vinyl) when I was nine, and I'm certain I wore out the grooves.

OK, my reputation for knowing lyrics to musicals has suffered a humiliating blow...At least I own neither Cinderella nor Ragtime, though I've heard those songs on ERS enough. But I should have got the Secret Garden one at least. Alas, for the decay of superpowers!

(You seem to own little music with lyrics that isn't musical theatre. :) )

[identity profile] crossfire.livejournal.com 2006-06-08 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
2. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - Mr. Pinstriped Suit
13. Meatloaf - Everything Louder than Everything Else

[identity profile] tahnan.livejournal.com 2006-06-08 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's amazing how few of them I knew. I mean, only 3, 4, and 5 are from songs I know at all (and I hate to say, I only recognized #4).

[identity profile] cycon.livejournal.com 2006-06-08 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
9 & 14 were easy, naturally. 7 I admit I did not recognize (let's face it — the diction on the cast album suffers a bit in that section).

I'm feeling rather annoyed that I recognize #8, as I have little but contempt for that show.

I may be completely and utterly wrong about this, but is 6 from Riverdance?

[identity profile] stevie-stever.livejournal.com 2006-06-08 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Geez, I saw that all of once. That wouldn't be the gospel piece, would it? And naturally, I don't know the title and I haven't googled it. :-P

[identity profile] cycon.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
No freakin' clue.
