So, MJ happened. (MJ = Mythical Journeys, a LARP.) I figured since the game had just had a rules reset, it was a good time to jump in and try it.

Overall reaction: enh. It was okay. There were some good moments, mostly involving player-player roleplaying. I discovered that I can use thrown weapons with at least a modicum of skill, if not a lot of range. There were some good fights, and some nice moments where I got to help solve a problem.

But I had lots of time where I didn't have much to do, and the group I was part of didn't do a very good job of staying together for a variety of in- and out-of-game reasons. I felt like I kept just missing opportunities to go do stuff.

All in all, while I had some fun, I don't think it was enough to make me overcome my misgivings about the amount of time required to play three ongoing LARPs at once.

The biggest thing of the weekend for me, though, had little to do with the game itself and everything to do with where it took place. You see, MJ uses the same site as Otherworld. I went to Otherworld in September 2001, and it remains one of the most extraordinary weekends I have ever had. This was the first time I'd been back to the site, and man, the memories just kept coming. The cognitive dissonance was weird -- it was odd to be Gemma the wannabe bard instead of Sorrel the Elsewhich ranger, and to be facing orcs and goblins instead of Anders and Wolven.

I stayed in the cabin next to the one we stayed in. I missed the morning Cocoa Anders!

The first time I crossed the bridge to the cabin area, all I could think of was our first encounter there with the hostile Anders.

I'm pretty sure I spotted the tree where we eventually found the candle. I certainly recognized the general area.

We got attacked by bandits in the gypsy camp area.

Walking up the path at one point, I realized I was in the spot where we defeated the Wolven. And at another point where two paths joined, I remembered the joint ranger-rogue action with another party.

I saw the glade where we hid from Jackpot and where Otherwise exploded. :)

Otherworld and MJ use the same building for the tavern. Otherworld's tavern wins hands-down for atmosphere.

I never happened to be in the area by the stables where the Banshee battle happened, and I never went to the module building, which is the same building that was the shop and the Court of Shadows. But I knew where they were.

I think my MJ experience may have suffered by comparison, just because Otherworld was so extraordinary and the memories are so vivid. But the nostalgia was fun.
