...just pray for rain.
Colorado's on fire. There are six major wildfires burning right now. My mother reports that there's dust or ash on the plants on her balcony in downtown Denver, and she decided not to go to an outdoor concert tonight so as not to have to breathe the smoky air. (None of the fires are actually close to Denver, but my mom says she couldn't even see the foothills because of the smoke drifting in from the fires.)
Glenwood Springs, one of my favorite mountain resort towns, is on fire. They had to evacuate my favorite hotel there, though I guess the hotel isn't itself threatened.
One of the fires was started by a spark escaping from an underground coal seam fire that's been burning for -- get this -- about a hundred years. (Apparently there are lots of these... with all that fuel, they're more or less impossible to put out. And normally they don't cause problems.) At least one of the others was caused by some twit's campfire.
Scary story of the day: apparently 8 hikers and their 2 dogs got trapped by one of the fires. A helicopter is leading them out, dumping water on the fire in front of them so they can walk out. Can you imagine??
There's been no rain. The snowpack is gone already (normally it'd still be quite noticeable at this point in the year). This and the wind means that fires spread really fast.
Pray for rain...
