By the time I finish writing this, it will be 8:46 EDT. It's a beautiful morning here in Boston, with a clear blue sky, just as it was in New York five years ago.

Of course we all know what happened next, and I've written about it before. But we humans like to observe anniversaries, and because of our fingers and toes we like 5s and 10s particularly. And so today is significant, a day to reflect and remember those who died, those who helped, and those who survived. I watched the "9/11" documentary on CBS last night -- the one filmed by two French filmmakers who were following a new firefighter, and that includes footage from inside the towers -- and was struck anew by the sadness and horror of that morning.

A lot has changed since then, both on a personal level and in the world at large. It's not all good, either, by a long shot. Some of it's very bad, in fact. But today I don't feel like debating the rights and wrongs of American and other people's actions since then. I don't like how people use September 11th for political or advertising or other such purposes, and especially on an anniversary day.

So today, I will simply remember. Remember a day of shock and disbelief and sadness, and thousands of lives lost, and people from all walks of life who did what had to be done that day.
