Last night, a little after midnight, we had the most amazing thunderstorm I've ever experienced in Massachusetts, and one of the most dramatic I can remember ever. It went on for a good 45 minutes at least, with torrential rain, more than one flash a second at times, and remarkably loud thunder. I half expected to find a neighborhood tree had been hit, because some of them were definitely of the simultaneous-flash-and-crack variety. Those make me nervous, but otherwise I enjoyed it. I didn't have a very good view from my house (and I wasn't keen on wandering around outside in it!), but the flashes of light did do interestingly stroboscopic things to the view.

Yeah, it was quite awesome. I counted at least two or three strikes that were within 200-400' of my bedroom window.

Not as spectacular in our neck of the woods...

Yeah, Chris and I actually sat on the porch and watched the whole thing. (Sadly we were at his first-floor house with trees, and not my third-floor house with unobstructed view.) The lightning did particularly cool things to the view of the neighbor's gutter stream.

So many strikes were close enough I could clearly see the actual bolts, not just flashes of light in the sky.

I went out on the front porch when the storm was directly overhead, and I heard lightning strike a tree just behind the house across the street (CRACK!). It was scary! I love thunderstorms, but last night was a little too much for me.
