I would love to go swimming someplace outdoors on one of these hot days. I know Walden Pond; what are some other good local places for outdoor swimming?
I don't think you have to buy a pass -- I think it's something like $5 for each visit. Not sure if it's Arlington residents only, though: I don't remember having to show ID, but that was a couple of years ago.
There's also the pool near Rindge/Alewife, which is free, but, well, you get the crowds that come with a free pool.
Do they still have the lifeguards who scream at you if you get within ten feet of the other side/kid's area/anything at all? After my first visit, I followed the time-honored Arlingtonian tradition of sneaking around the fence after dark to use it. They don't seem to understand the concept of being near-sighted; pointing out that it's easier to avoid things if you can actually see them just garnered more screaming. I was thoroughly unimpressed. Also, it's only about six feet deep at it's deepest point, which you aren't allowed to swim in because it's "too close" to the other side.
Puffer's Pond in Amherst MA. Then there was this little plunge pool off a waterfall in Whately MA --- nobody but me and some coyotes ever went there. Very nice.
