A meme on memory, from [livejournal.com profile] ironrat:
Select a memory you have of me
And write it in a comment to this blog.
It could be good or bad, online or off,
Whatever suits your fancy. I don't care.
Then post the meme in your own journal, too,
If it sounds fun to you to carry on.

Pinafore cue-to-cue. Need I say more?

For those who didn't see it or haven't heard this particular story yet, it was getting late and towards the end of the second act where Buttercup (saxikath) makes her big revelation. Buttercup was center stage and we were all huddled around her to listen. Well actually we were standing around in the formation waiting on lighting to do stuff and getting awfully punchy. Anyway, at this point in the blocking Buttercup would usually do this mysterious/stern look at all of us, but in the spirit of goofing around in the downtime, she put on this frighteningly huge and enhthusiastic smile and did jazz hands at me. It totally broke me. I ended up on the floor and couldn't stop laughing. Still makes me chuckle when I remember it.

Is that how it started?

I do remember it starting during cue-to-cue, but I just remembered that I hadn't seen anyone doing it before that night, and by the end of the night everybody and their dog were doing it... Of course, I was usually positioned near the back of the crowds, so that might be how I missed the start...

Actually, the men's chorus at least had been doing it for most of the rehearsal period. It got a bit excessive during cue-to-cue because of the punchiness.

So, the first Gondoliers rehearsal I showed up to, I was a bit late, and had gotten a frappe on my way up because I hadn't had time to eat a proper dinner... Right after a big sip, a certain vocal director asked me to sing soprano... The first song we worked on was the Cachucha, which has lots of happy-fun high A's and G's for the sopranos... I'm amazed that I hit any of them that night, but I did... I'm also amazed that I still had a voice left after the show was over with a couple months spent sitting at the top of my range, so I think I'll belatedly thank Kat for doing a good job, since I think part of her job was to make sure nobody destroyed their voice... :-)

Pinafore hack night: "Sir - you are drunk!"

(I don't remember the incident to which Nick refered.)

(I would have formed my answer in blank verse,
but quoting in blank verse a line that's not -
It wasn't gonna work. So I gave up.)

*Not* said by Kat on hack night, for good reason, but related to her part...

"Confide in me--Fear not! I am your mother!" (For those unfamiliar with the story of HMS Pinafore, let's just sum it up this way: it's easy to find oedipal undertones if you're looking for some)

What's with all the Pinafore memories? Sheesh! Instead:

Second memory that came to mind: sitting at a table in Vancouver saying, "Chocolatini? Weenietini? Wapitini?"

But of course, first memory that came to mind: "Oh god. OK. You're going to need to crawl forward veeeeery slowly--no, don't arch your back, that's bad..."

Dinner with you and Six and Claudia. Smiles. A red-and-white checked tablecloth, and wondering whether it reminded you of crossword puzzle grids. "Please Go Away--Often!"

I'll go with a recent memory of Kath. At this year's Stamford tournament, she was in 3rd place after 6 puzzles. She was thrilled at the potential prospect of going to the big boards, and rightly so. I was 25 points behind her, meaning that if I solved the next puzzle one minute faster than she did, I'd be going to the big board instead.

As it happened, she and I had been sitting directly across from each other all tournament long, so it turned into a solving showdown. But what was cool about it was that for both of us, if the other person won, we wanted them to win it all. Two friends being competitive for the shot at a big prize, but also hoping the other person did well. A good moment, regardless of the outcome.

"Three little maids at school are we.
We didn't go to MIT.
We cannot locate Building 3.
Three little maids at school...
Three little maids who, in confusion
Come to a science institution,
Sing operettas in profusion;
Three little maids at school,
Three little maaaaids at school!"

Ruddigore chorines, 1997. Originally I'd been set down as a 2nd soprano, and Kat and (I think) three other women had been set down as altos. When the other altos quit, I badgered the MD (who is now the Vox Lucens director) into letting me impersonate an alto instead. The two of us managed to balance a flock of sopranos (including [livejournal.com profile] katfairy, the third Little Maid) and the rest is history. :)
