I just had an inspiration for something to do for a gift for my mother. I have a bunch of clothes she made me when I was little (she used to make me a new dress or outfit every year for my birthday), and fabric leftovers from some others. Obviously, I'm never going to wear them again, and it seems kind of silly to hang onto them, but at the same time there's a lot of sentimental value to them. I want to make something -- a pillow, a hanging, a small blanket, I dunno -- with them. A fabric-covered photo album?

I don't think I have the patience to do quilting for real, but something patchworky is what I have in mind. Anyone have any suggestions?

I know you said no quilting, but this is not really quilting. My mom made me one of these and it is all soft and cute.

I'd go with a patchwork pillow cover--and I think that's a really sweet gift for your mom. :) (I have a gazillion old T-shirts, from shows and family vacation spots and stuff, that I keep meaning to turn into a patchwork bedspread one of these days...)

Yeah, I think the pillowcover is the easiest thing, and probably best because it can be on display (on the couch or bed) all the time. Also, since it's a simple bag, it doesn't technically involve quilting.

If you run into trouble and need advice, ask me: I've done this sort of project before.
