Why is Yoko Ono part of the Olympic opening ceremonies?

And why have Peter Gabriel sing "Imagine" an octave low?

The acrobats-turned-dove were pretty cool, though. (As was the thing where all the people made a ski jumper earlier on.)

...although it doesn't seem fair to me that they had Cirque du Soleil in the ceremony when the next Winter Olympics are in Canada!

He sang part of it an octave low so he could then do that jump-up-an-octave thing he likes to do. I was watching it and thinking that he sounded fine--as good as he ever sounds outside of a studio, anyways; he's one of those people for whom production is a musical instrument--but he looked awful.

I think making artistic and musical concessions to multiple nations at once is like trying to make the proverbial horse by committee... you wind up with a camel. Serbia wants Right Said Fred, Greece wants Yanni, France wants Geordi the rapping baby, Russia wants a Scorpions reunion... and you end up with Peter Gabriel and Yoko Ono.

Part of me thinks it would be really cool if the opening ceremonies and overall Olympic theme each year was dictated by the host country's preferences. Instead of a incoherent mishmash of artistic stylings, you could actually get a bona fide cultural perspective.

I thought Norway did a great job that way for the Lillehammer Olympics.

Yes, some friends and I watched last night and most of it was VERY weird, but we also liked the ski-jumper and dove creations. And the national anthem and bringing-in-of-the-flag.

The disco music, though? WTF?

I'm not much for corny ceremonies, so I didn't watch it, instead watching the rest of the Four Continents (figure skating) championship recorded on Super Bowl night. The next day, I heard a clip of Pavarotti, and was sorry I'd missed that. He sounded surprisingly good, considering his ill health.

We have tickets to the closing ceremony included in our package, and Andrew wants to go, even though our plane to Rome leaves before dawn. I think we are going to have to, so one of us doesn't get an attack of the once in a lifetime regrets afterwards.

I was just glad that they weren't going to have her sing Imagine...

hey... you don't know me, but since you're the only one i've came across that actually seems to pay attention to the olympics, I was wondering if you knew what that game is where they slide rock lookin' thingies across ice, and smooth out the ice in front of the rock. I think it's shuffle board, but my friends have a different theory. I'd love it if you'd shed some light on to it. :)
