I had no idea that Nikolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky was a real mathematician! I thought that Tom Lehrer just made up a good Russian name.

In "Too Many Songs by Tom Lehrer," Lehrer apologizes for slandering N.I.L. The song is a parody of a Danny Kaye routine, apparently, and N.I.L. was chosen purely for scansion.
