Now, I know some of you out there object to the idea of modernizing the setting of a G&S. And this one does have a modernized setting; it's been transposed to a modern American high school. I can't tell you what you do or don't like, but I can tell you this: I was very skeptical of the concept at first. But it works. It works really really well. I encourage you to give it a chance, and in the process you'll be treated to some very talented performers doing some very clever things. And if you've seen a lot of MITG&S shows, this is your chance to see some new faces and some familiar faces doing quite unfamiliar things. So please come!

Also: If you can't come this weekend, but are free tonight, we're looking to have a small audience for the dress rehearsal to give the cast some experience with how an audience reacts. Contact me if you're interested.

The first Patience I saw at Harvard updated the setting to the 1950's-1960's, with Bunthorne and Grosvenor as beatnik poets. It worked very well.

Hey, I was going to say that! (Then again, we saw it together, as I recall.)

Patience really lends itself to updated settings, I think. (Of course, now I have an image of Patience crossed with West Side Story....)

I have two tickets reserved for Saturday night. And frankly, of the 4 G&S shows I've done so far, all of them were of the more traditional staging and setting. A change of pace might be just the thing I'm looking for.

The first production of Dido et Aeneas I saw was at Harvard, and the witch's entourage was updated to be a bunch of modsters who were cellphone herding. It was carried off beautifully and even got a fair amount of laughter. And I loved the production in general.

Wish I could see it. I actually thought about doing my Patience this way. Unfortunately I couldn't figure out what to do with Jane. Is she older than the high schoolers? Then why is she hitting on Bunthorne? Is she just a senior who's leaving school and feels old?

Yeah, I've been wondering how they'll do Jane. If they cut out the verse about her being old, she could just be unattractive.

After yomtov, if we can arrange a playdate for our 2.5-year-old daughter, I'm hoping to reserve tickets for Sunday's matinee for myself, my sife, and (most importantly) my 5-year-old (as of tomorrow!) son.
