This is directed to people living in or familiar with the Boston-Cambridge area:

What's a good place for a "let's get together for a drink after work" situation? Not a date situation, just friends getting together.

The Asgard in Central Square isn't bad.

My default location for such things has become the Cambridge Common, on Mass Ave between Harvard and Porter. Very casual, roomy, has a wide beer selection and good food.

If mixed drinks are more to your liking, the West Side Lounge, which is literally across the street, also works.

I like the Asgard too, but here is the rest of my off-the-top-of-my-head list:

CBC in Kendall area
Tavern on the Square in Central
the Temple Bar near Porter (halfway to Harvard)
the Joshua Tree in Davis
Orleans in Davis (a couple blocks toward Teele Square)

I'm all about The Field in Central. It's a good talking place when it's not crowded, and after-work is probably one of those times.

Cambridge Brewing Company seems to be the canonical place for that. I'm also fond of the Thirsty Scholar, though it's a bit louder.

We used to the Burren in davis square. Sometimes a bit loud, but the atmosphere, food, and drinks are often quite good.

Having lived on the other side of the river for the entire time, I can't really speak to what's in Cambridge (although I agree with those who said CBC is a good place for such a thing), but this time of year the places on Boston-side are less crowded than normal thanks to BU being out of session. Not that those are great after work type places to begin with due to the crowd they normally cater to (especially in Allston), but something to keep in mind.

In the Cambridge area, I'd say pretty much anywhere in Harvard Square. Grendel's Den (over in that block with the Staples, near the Garage?) is nice for casual/pubbyness, Grafton Street is classier (by the Hong Kong, down Mass Ave near Bartley's.

Those are my recommends!
