A silly names poll.

While writing something up recently, I was thinking about what names we associate with different cultures. I'm sticking with European here because they're the ones I know at least something about.

For each of the following, tell me the first name (given name, not surname) that comes to mind for the given nationality.

The *first* one that comes to mind, free-association style, is sometimes completely off the wall. So in some of these cases I picked ones that struck me as more canonical (rather than, say, "Kyle" for a Scottish man. The only Kyles I in fact know are my baby cousin, the one on South Park, and majordomo, none of whom are Scottish).

The first Scottish name I thought of was Jamie because I am unabashedly hooked on the Outlander series.

You can tell who the Doctor Who fans are -- they answered "Jamie" for the Scottish man. (Granted, I could have said Ralph - that's my Scot brother-in-law.)

Granted, I'm a real Dr. Who geek to have posted the French woman's name I did.

The first Italian man/woman names that popped into my mind were my grandparents' names.
