Links and memes
Jan. 2nd, 2003 01:30 pmSo last night I started the "100 Things About Me" meme, got to #53, and then accidentally closed the window. Drat.
So instead, here's
Employment: Precarious. I did contract and freelance editing work, starting and ending the year doing projects for Publicom, an educational publishing development house. Apart from the North Carolina social studies textbook I started the year with, pretty much all my gainful work this year involved standardized test prep either in math or social studies. I had two interviews for permanent positions; one didn't go anywhere, and the other was right at the end of the year so I don't expect to have heard anything yet.
Music and theater: New ventures. I vocal directed The Gondoliers (first real directing job), had a bit part in a non-musical one-act (first non-musical theater since about junior high), and participated in a Broadway revue (first non-MIT theater in quite a while, and first venture into a community I didn't know at all). Vocally I feel like I'm not in as good a place as I was when, say, I did Pinafore in 2001; need to be better about practicing.
Puzzles: Placed 13th at the crossword tournament in Stamford; that's down from 2001 (12th) but I guess up percentagewise, because there were a lot more people. NPL convention was in Vancouver, which rocked. (Gelato! Sushi! Mountains! Ocean! People!) Agreed to be 2nd veep of the NPL and to co-host the 2004 convention in Boston. Then in December, made what will be either the stupidest or the smartest decision I've made in a long time and agreed to edit The Enigma.
Physical: Joined a gym for the first time in my life. Was pretty regular about going during the summer, but then got a daytime contract job and stopped being able to go regularly, and got really bad about it. Must do better. I do notice that I'm in a bit better shape.
Miscellaneous: Got my mother's old car and drove it from Colorado to here. Started LARPing and loving it. Discovered LJ thanks to
tahnan and
davehogg. Reconnected with
davehogg and
crossfire_ and others I hadn't talked to in a long time. Visited Taos with my mother.
All in all, a year with less change in it than most of the last few. Not the most stable of years for me, or the most pleasant, but I survived it.
