Been a while since I updated. Some random things that have happened, tidbits I learned, and general braindump:

  • Damn, but that was a long, tough Mystery Hunt. There were some brilliant puzzles and we had a lot of fun... but 67 hours? Sheesh.
  • Damn, but ACRONYM rocks. We came within a couple hours and a few puzzles of winning, despite having not worked together as a whole group before. Nice job, guys.
  • Quote of the Hunt, for me at least:
Me: "Oh my god, it's a phonetic cryptogram."
    M/W: [makes flabbergasted face]
[livejournal.com profile] tahnan asks what the face means, is it fear, or what?
M/W: "That's my brain leaving out the back door while my face distracts you."
  • Commuting by car is going to get old in a hurry. About an hour and a quarter each way. Manchester's a nice city, though, maybe I'll get to know it some.
  • Things I learned: Don't leave liquid laundry detergent in the car in the winter. I swear there were bits of ice in it.
  • I don't know that I've ever before today woken up to the radio telling me it was 3 degrees in Boston.
  • I had my first-ever personal training session at the gym tonight. The trainer taught me a bunch of free-weight exercises and how to use some equipment I hadn't used before. And I have one more session to go. (Christmas gift from mom.)
  • I'm sorry I missed Sweeney, it looks like it was cool.
  • lj's servers are being annoying tonight.
  • I need to start doing lots of crosswords to get ready for Stamford. My brochure came yesterday; quite glossy this year!
  • I hope my first issue of The Enigma comes out okay. *twitch*
  • I still haven't seen Two Towers. Or Chicago. I need to go to the movies!

My sphere is Guardian (Person of great Love and Altruism), and my class is Defender (Peaceful, yet Potent).

I am a Warden.

To be a Warden is to be the ultimate Guardian. Whether a physical Guardian or an essential Guardian, is up to you. You may be both. To be a physical Guardian is to be a living, breathing testament to the love you carry for a person, or people, whose lives you will always defend if you possibly can. To be an essential Guardian is to be a living, breathing testament to the security that your wards seek, and will look to you for your always kind, always nurturing support.

What kind of Warrior are you?

(My alternates, next on the scores, were Shield Bearer, Sentry, or Hero.)

And one for you all, swiped from [livejournal.com profile] thedan:
1. What do you call me?
2. What song makes you think of me, and why?
3. If you could give me one present, what would it be?
4. What one thing/event do you associate with me?
5. How well do you think you know me?

1. Kath. Wait, no...Val. Wait, no...Kabeta? Gwenllian?? Saxifrage?!?

Nah...Vubbalubbentubbine. That's it.

2. "Oh My Darling, Clementine". (Do you remember why?)
3. Hmmm...I dunno. A Scrabble set, maybe. I bet you're really good at Scrabble.
4. Crossword puzzles and Valentine's Day, of course. :-)
5. Not as well as I used to, I suppose. It's been a while.

(What is a phonetic cryptogram, by the way?)

Warden, huh? Cool.

1. Kath. Occasionally if the context calls for it, Kabeta.
2. You'll have to wait and see.
3. Remember that trip to London we talked about years ago?
4. Actually there are a couple...the time we went to the zoo on new year's day a couple of years ago, and of course the TCG parties.
5. Probably not very.

1. What do you call me?
Kath or Kat.

2. What song makes you think of me, and why?
The finale from Iolanthe, for probably obvious reasons...:)

3. If you could give me one present, what would it be?
Tickets to the show of your choice on Broadway. Someday when I have money.

4. What one thing/event do you associate with me?
Throwing my stuffed leopard at you.

5. How well do you think you know me?
Not terribly well

Secret Garden concert. Colin throws a tantrum (and my leopard) at Mary. :) Well, it's really all of the concert, but that moment stands out for me.

1. For the first few years, it was always Kat. Lately "Kath" seems to spring to mind first though. Maybe because your LJ personal name lists it first.

2. Anything I've heard you perform, certainly... but I fear the Buttercup numbers produce the strongest associations. *ducks and runs for cover*

3. Your Faerie Queene cloak (guess I'd have to steal it from Kate C. somehow).

4. I suppose "MITG&SP" is the overarching answer. To narrow it down more interestingly, let's say: Your writing all those brilliant G&S crosswords for our green room entertainment. I really missed them during Pirates!

5. Not as well as I'd like :-)

1. What do you call me?
A great many things. Most recently, I think, "irrepressible."

2. What song makes you think of me, and why?
Again, several candidates here, but I'll go with Lavender, for reasons most people here could figure out with a little effort.

3. If you could give me one present, what would it be?
A stable and fulfilling job within your ZIP code?

4. What one thing/event do you associate with me?
There is no way I can narrow this down to one. As a major player in three separate stages of my life (so far), you can go ahead and take your pick of associations.

5. How well do you think you know me?
About as well as I know anyone I don't see on a weekly basis, I'd asy.

A propos of nothing much, I've decided actually to start developing my LJ account--hence the nifty new/old picture. Check it out if you're interested.

A propos of even less, what the heck does the ACRONYM tag do? I just noticed it in the list of usable tags in the list here...

1. Kath with a silent H. :)

2. Many, many, many. Right now, it's "Les Anges Dans Nos Campagnes", because someone was whistling it in the hall and you were the person I watched for the downbeat.

3. A job you loved that didn't screw you over on paychecks or require you to drive long distances.

4. Too many!! Random choice: writing the Supreme Hydrator sketch for last year's Hunt.

5. Not all that well yet, in spite of having known you for (by my standards) a relatively long time. Ask me again in another nine years. :)

That is an EVIL cryptogram. The characters aren't even very distinguishable, let along what they mean.

Can it still truly be called "liquid laundry detergent" under those circumstances?

I haven't seen Two Towers either. Chicago was cool.

1. Kat
2. Well, sadly, "I'm called Little Buttercup." Your hack version. Ack! Davie's website is gone with his Athena account! Did anyone keep a copy of the lyrics from it? I should put it in the mitg&sp archives!
3. I'm terrible with presents. I tried giving you a job, but that trick never works for me.
4. I dunno. Probably Gondoliers more than anything else. Or maybe a certain comment involving the word "throttle," made after a Pirates rehearsal. :-)
5. Not particularly well - our encounters are all in Specific Context. I know you pretty well as a G&S afficianado, performer, and vocal director, and puzzle-maker, but I assume there's more to you than that.

Nothing wrong with associating you with Pinafore. It's just "that insipid song." :-)

HS&M Pinafore (play)

A Hack Night
Wed 14 November 2001
La Sala de Puerto Rico

These are the songs from Hack night.

I'm called Little Buttercup

by Katherine Bryant

I'm called Little Buttercup,
Dear little Buttercup,
Tell me, what did I do wrong?
Oh, why is poor Buttercup,
Poor little Buttercup,
Stuck with this insipid song?

The words are all sappy;
The meter's not snappy;
The tune is annoying, to boot.
My props are distracting
My mind from my acting
And sailors who are just too cute.

It's driving me crazy!
My mind's going hazy --
I'll keep going nuts till it stops.
It's so bad, I'm thinking
Of coping by drinking
This excellent peppermint schnapps!

So tell little Buttercup,
Dear little Buttercup,
Gilbert, please give a reply;
Oh, tell little Buttercup,
Poor little Buttercup:
Why, Mr. Sullivan, why?

He is at MIT

by David Euresti
He is at MIT,

For he's always problem setting,
and sleep he's never getting,
Since he goes to MIT

For he could've gone to Harvard,
or Princeton, Yale, or Stanford,
Or Perhaps the AFA.

But inspiste of opportunities,
to attend these universities
He remains at MIT,
He remains at MIT.

The Hours Creep on Apace

by Bridget Copley
The hours creep on apace.
My guilty heart is ruing --
Ah, that I might undo
What Steph has got me doing --
Its folly it were easy to be showing,
What I am giving up, and whither going.

On the one hand,
E39, filled with linguistics lads and lasses,
Big conferences in distant Santa Cruz,
Rare languages, aspectual verb classes,
Rich Indonesian data sets for my dissertation,
And hopefully, a speedy graduation!

And on the other,
A dark rehearsal room in W20 with everybody singing,
Where directors yell, and clashing divas fume,
and Dick Deadeye overboard they are flinging,
Where moments to get work done are rarities,
And dinner is bad sushi from LaVerde's!

Amid this great cacophony,
Untiring and unknown,
We toil for Todd and Stephanie,
Till half the night has flown.
No PhD can they impart,
No fine commencement dress,
No fortune -- save this silly part,
And love of G&S!

And yet, I'm so behind, you know,
That if I choose to do this show,
To sing upon this set so pretty,
I'll have to lie to my committee.

Oh, god of love, and god of research, say
Which of you twain shall my poor heart obey?

Amid this great cacophony,
Untiring and unknown,
No PhD can they impart,
No fine commencement dress,
No fortune -- save this silly part,
And love of G&S!

Oh, god of love, and god of research, say
Which of you twain shall my poor heart obey?

A British Tart

By Emily Hanna and Jacquie Felton

As cheap as a Mountain Dew
She never can resist a cute sailor when she's pissed
In fact she'll take a few

I haven't seen _Chicago_ either. Everyone I know who's seen it says it's great. We could arrange an expedition, if we can find other folks who haven't seen it. :)

Oh, and I was a Shield Bearer on the quiz (second: Retainer). Go figure.
