Do you ever run into a song lyric that just grabs you, even if you're not entirely sure what it means?

Mine, today, is "She fills up every corner like she's born in black and white."

Ooh! I love that song. And by weird coincidence, just Saturday, Ed was trying to work out the chord progression on his guitar (which he's returning to after a fairly lengthy haitus) while I crooned along. KT Turnstall's got such a cool voice!

Oh, once or twice. Once or twice.

When I was an undergraduate I developed an obsessive fascination with the Talking Heads. None of their lyrics make any sense. It's either intentional dada or just gibberish meant to sound good with the music.

That didn't stop me from becoming excessively fond of lines like "I'm wearing fur pajamas. I ate a hot potato" or "somewhere in South Carolina, gravity don't mean a thing."

Your lyric, on the other hand, sounds like it actually does have a meaning, but for the life of me, I have no idea what it might be.

"She fills up every corner like she's born in black and white"? Sounds like a song about Ellen, Katherine, Stella, me, etc.

Ah, see, I'm dense. I'm aware of Katherine through her college roommate, my wife, the former Carole Stoops. And I know about crossword fiendery, but I don't automatically think in those terms.

OK.

I'm curious enough about it now that I'll have to see if I can find a copy somewhere. I listen to live radio somewhere between .01 and .5 seconds per week so I won't have heard it already.

They Might Be Giants does that to me a lot.

Love the icon, love Sir Derek... Haven't seen that movie in a long time (well, partly because it takes a long time to see the movie) but it's kicking around here on video. Whatever happened to Kenneth Branagh, anyway? Letting Emma go was the dumbest thing he ever did...

I love that song and that lyric.

I think it's referring to the fact that old film stars (back in the black and white days) were these really amazing divas with huge personality and charm, larger than life, pulling your eyes to them.
