A random hodgepodge of stuff from the past week or so:

  • Went to see Spirited Away at MIT last weekend. Was, well, spirited away. :) And blown away. Visually beautiful, and much more nuanced storyline than I'm used to in animated movies (or most movies, for that matter). I've never been much into anime, but this was astonishing. Highly recommended. And now I can say I've seen two of this year's Oscar-nominated movies! That's more than is true in many years for me.
  • "Eagle High" from Utopia, even more than "Hail, Poetry," shows off Sullivan's hymn-writing chops. The ending of it sounds so much like a church choral anthem I can't stand it.
  • I have freelance work lined up for after the current batch ends. Yay!
  • I have to write hints for January/February Enigma puzzles to put in the March issue. I have no idea what to say.
  • I shoveled out our sidewalk & driveway after the big storm. And didn't even feel too sore afterwards. Carving a path through the mountain left across the driveway by the snowplow was the toughest part of it.
  • Legends winter feast is this weekend. Must remake my boffer sword between now and then.
  • moo (may I call you moo, since that's how you sign your comments?) gave me a big piece of naugahydish stuff that I can make some costume pieces for Legends from. Yay moo! Now I just have to decide exactly what to make, and whether I want to make something that suits my current character or hold off, on the theory that my current character may die soon if I'm not careful. :)
  • I need some new clothes (everyday clothes, not costume stuff. Though that too.). Any suggestions?
  • I've caught up with the writers at work, so I end up with time to kill while waiting for them to send stuff in. Twiddle.
  • Re the title of this entry: Stamford is coming up in less than a month. I am so out of practice. I've started doing back NYT crosswords, and I feel sluggish. If I'm ever gonna crack the top 10, I gotta get sharp again.

Time for lunch, I guess.

Eagle High

I have sort of mixed feelings about Eagle High myself, but that's probably because of Harvard's little trick 2 years ago of ending the show on it--not only did it mean the orchestra ended playing on a diminished chord (unresolved chords are something that get under my skin...), it meant the audience was sitting there confused for a while not quite sure what to do when it was over...

(Um, now that I've said that, MIT's not doing that, are they?) Very pretty tune, nonetheless...

I've gotten some great stuff from Silhouettes and the sale section of Nordstom's can have some good stuff too.

Clothes

I have found some good cheap stuff at Sears both in Burlington and Cambridge Side. Also, the Avenue stores in the area have some nice stuff and they tend to have good sales selections. Lands End has some stuff, but can be pretty expensive (though it is really well made).

Good luck with the "leather"!

(moo seems to be my livejournal nom, so I'm fine with that. :-)

Do you just not want an LJ, which I can certainly understand, or could I offer you a code?

Whereas mine is "finish first at my table." Assuming that I sit at the same table I have for the last two years. Which means sitting next to Jon Delfin.

Hey, aim high.

Of course, I still need to register. Which means I still need to find a roommate. And a way to get there.

Geez, and I was proud of myself for doing it in 13:37! :)

(can usually eventually finish Tuesday, can finish Wednesday on a good week, stares helplessly at the rest while brain turns to congealed lump - is never going to impress Kath at this pace)

Wow, you're...

...doing much of what I'd be doing if I were still in Boston!!
Except for the professional-level Xword solving :)
Can I live through you for a few moments?
Spirited Away was fantastic. The self-contained bath house universe, the achingly beautiful train ride... mmm.
I hope you have a great time at the feast; I look forward to the interesting "rumors" that will appear on the site afterwards.
Cya in late June, semicuz.
