Balkan music?

Anyone out there know anything about Balkan music? Having not succeeded at any of my other auditions, I'm now thinking about auditioning for Revels week after next, and the Balkans are this year's theme. Revels does eat December, but I'm really feeling the performing itch, so I might even be willing to deal with that. Assuming they'd take me, that is. I'm neither a regular nor brand new, though it has been 11 years (!) since I was in it before. Hard to gauge my chances.

Anyone have any other suggestions for things I could audition for?

All I know about Balkan music is that they seem to be fond of really wacky time signatures.

That's exactly right; my partner Paul has enjoyed Bulgarian folk dancing since college. I always joke with him that he doesn't like dancing unless the music has a √13/π time signature.

Balkan music has super weird time signatures. It uses really cool instruments. I don't remember any of their names.
