Specifically, I hate the amount of money required for me to be with people I love for holidays. (Thanksgiving car rentals and Christmas airfares, in this case.) Yecch.
I hate it, too! We have pretty much given up on Thanksgiving. Christmas was a little easier last year when we could visit both families with a flight into south and a few hours in a car but this year we have to fly south and then north to my brother's place.
I know. And it's worse with small munchkins when you have to pay for seats for them, too. *sigh* I want to visit my family. I love Colorado. I don't have $1000 to drop every time I want to do it.
As a side note, you are totally welcome to spend time with us. ;) Munchkins and all.
Seriously. I'm just grateful both of my parents stayed in Pittsburgh post-divorce, and that my brother came back after college. My extended family is elsewhere, but least I don't have to fly all over the place just to see my parents.
I only have to go one place to see my parents. It's just an annoyingly expensive one. (The Boston-Denver air route is always expensive, and seems particularly so for Christmas this year.)
Thanksgiving and Christmas fares to Florida are messed up enough that it's actually cheapest for ocschwar and me to fly first class for some of our flights... Not that I'm complaining.
But then...I was recently reeling from the sticker shock of our upcoming trip to Orlando when all of the sudden I said to myself, "Self, what else are you saving that money for? It's your Vacation Fund, right?"
I am! I am a United Methodist pastor in Rock Springs; my husband Sheeyun's job is in Aurora, Colorado (and State College, Pennsylvania, and occasionally elsewhere). Our son Thomas Chun Woo is my associate pastor for congregational care here in Wyoming. Chun Woo and I live 5-6 days a week in Wyoming and 2-1 in Colorado, on average. For Sheeyun, that's reversed.
I know exactly what you mean. I just bought tickets from DC to Casper (via Denver) a few days ago. Noticably more expensive than in previous years. I hate having having something like seeing loved ones boxed into a financial constraint.
On a total tangent, my parents went to my cousin's wedding in CA. They had to be in Albuquerque the day after which made things complicated. So they drove to Albuquerque, and flew to LA. Via Denver. Because that was the cheapest. Please tell me this makes sense.

At that moment I was enlightened. :-D
