I still don't know what I'm wearing to my dad's wedding.

But I know what I'm not wearing.

That's a *very* clever way of hiding a satellite receiver dish into your hat. Must be good for the boring bits of the ceremony/reception. "And now, the bride's fourth cousin's sister would like to say a few words..."

*ponders*

The hat that launched a thousand channels?

The "You might also like" in the sidebar, the hat that looks like someone misplaced an umbrella, I've seen people wear things like that in synagogue. Some people can carry off big hats. That one? I can't imagine *anyone* carrying that off.

Egad! Didn't Myrna Loy wear that in one of the Thin Man movies? It looks like something right out of 1938.

Have you ever noticed the witch's hat worn by Katherine Hepburn in Holiday? Someone-- maybe my sister?-- assured me that that truly was a short-lived 1950s fashion, but I haven't been able to believe it, after trying for more than twenty years.

I've never seen Holiday. Do you mean this hat? That's the only image I can find of Katharine Hepburn wearing a hat in that film.

For truly weird hats in the 20th century, nothing quite matches the 30s. Milliners were trying to out-bizarre each other.

Ah, thirties! That makes sense.I'm not sure I'm misremembering what I was told about the period for the witchy hats, either, though it's quite possible-- my sister was a great one for snottily giving misinformation.

That hat startled me so much I double-checked that I had the right movie in mind: I did. I don't recall that hat, from the movie I saw almost thirty years ago. The ones I remember had narrow brims and, er, pointy, witchy peaks.

Maybe if you watch the "Sex and the City" movie this weekend, you'll have more courage about attempting an outfit like that.

Aw, but there's comma sex on the front.

Sparkly comma sex!

My brain took this weird detour from that. "Is comma sex gay? Yes, the straight pairing is comma and period, as in a semicolon. But how about a colon - that's two periods! Must be lesbian chic."

Does the propeller in the front spin to create a breeze and keep you cool? That would be pretty spiffy.

I think that among the talents of fashion models, the ability to keep a straight face is underrated.

This reminds me of the time that my mother somehow got on the mailing list for a catalog of southern black woman's Baptist Church apparel...

It's odd that they have a white woman modeling it. I've never seen white women wearing that in real life, but I've seen similar clothing and hats in the dress shops near the corner of Fulton Street and Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant, where the patrons are mostly West Indians of color, with a few Africans and African-Americans.
