1) Do you think of yourself as patriotic?

Yes. But not in the mindless flag-waving sense. I can't think of another country where I'd rather live (most of the time, anyway), and I think this country has done some very good things. I'm ashamed of a lot of things we've done, too, but one of the things that makes me feel patriotic is the thought that I can say so without being killed or carted away. (And my greatest fear about the country is that that will go away.)

2) What've you read lately that's really made you sit and think for awhile?

Not enough, alas. :( I've been rereading Guns, Germs, and Steel, which always makes me think, though.

3) What piece of advice would you give your 19-year-old self?

You don't have to go right to grad school after college. Really.

4) If you had to lose your sense of touch or your eyesight, which would you settle on?

Gaah! Not a nice choice! But I guess I'd go with eyesight, because I can't fathom a world without being able to feel anything.

5) What's your favorite drink? (Alcoholic, non alcoholic, whatever.)

It really depends on the circumstances. Good coffee, a glass of vinho verde (Portuguese slightly sparkly white wine), fresh-squeezed orange juice, hard cider...
