I need new shoes or boots for Legends. They should be suitable for running around outdoors. Ideally they'd look good too. And I need help choosing. In answering, ignore the price, and assume that any of these would fit. (Not necessarily a valid assumption, but for these purposes, it'll do.)

I like the little slip ons but I also think the shorter boots from Silhouettes are nice, too.

Watch out for the riding boots. I have something very similar and they kinda pinch my toes.

I recommended 1, but 2 would also work for what you want. I think laces are a very good idea for anything you're going to be wearing while walking over uneven ground. I'd recommend against the riding boots if you're going to be walking, as they'll not give you the kind of ankle support you need and will probably blister your feet if they're at all prone to swelling.

I'd weight ankle support and sturdy construction about equally highly in your criteria. Between #2 and #6 (I voted for the latter), I'd say choose the one that can stand up to the most abuse.

I picked #6, but my second choice is #3, the velcro slip-ons. The latter (or I suppose any of the leather lace-ups) seem like they might be more weatherproof; is that a consideration?

I picked #2 for what you're talking about...but #5 and #6 look way cool.

The Shoe Dilemma

Hey Kath!

So, shoes for Legends are always a thorny problem, due to the period-looking vs. comfortable/waterproof debate. My solution is to wear my normal Legends shoes unless it's pouring rain and freezing, in which case no one will notice your Timberland hiking boots under your mud-caked skirt hem. (I have the black knee-highs from that page)

I looked at all those, and they either fail the period-looking test or the sturdy-looking test. My mocs occasionally get wet, but I do hike out to Hobgoblin Hill and back at least twice an event. Generally through mud/standing water/streams.

One caveat, in the form of a story: I was changing from the aforementioned sodden mocs into the hiking boots during the spring event where it poured all weekend. Nature's Paw was having a cookout, and in the process of cleaning up, the cabin was attacked by Morloths. JHo arrived with his arrows, and as I was struggling to get my socks on, I look up to hear, "Slay!" *whoosh**thunk* right into my shoulder/torso join.

So change your shoes quickly. :)

I have a suggestion for the damp feet problem... and to be honest, it only goes so far.

Get water wicking socks. When it poured the Sunday of the bike ride, I stepped in a puddle and was like "well, there goes my dry foot." and for about a minute I was right. But another minute later, I noticed that my foot was dry again. They were really amazing.

Oh, yeah, they won't help in a flood, but they are great for morning dew and some rain.

You can get them at REI or City Sports. They are a little more expensive than your regular socks, but they are worth it.
