I had a book of fairy tales as a kid. In it was a story about a spoiled brat of a princess who was sent off to live with a poor family till she learned to behave herself. The princess's name was Esmeralda, and at some point in the story she attempts to bake muffins and they come out kind of wrong.

I wish I knew what fairy tale collection that was. I've never seen that particular story anywhere else.

Why is it that these half-remembered things poke themselves up out of our subconscious at random moments?

Don't look at me; I was trying to fall asleep the other night and I suddenly remembered that my pediatrician's office had fish on the wallpaper when I was, oh, under the age of seven or so.

I dunno why. For me, they happen usually when I'm under stress or after a high fever.

That was Alfred the Great, and he was King of England.
