saxikathTwenty minutes since my last entry, and I've figured it out: the story was "The Plain Princess" by Phyllis McGinley.
(Edited to add: it may not have been her version, because it was in a collection, and I can't tell for sure from the web if it was a pre-existing tale that she just retold, but it was definitely that story.)
