greenlily and I went to see Revels last night. I needed that. This year's theme was Scotland, and my but there was some fine singing and dancing. The kids were, as always, exceedingly cute (one tiny girl especially), and the fiddlers and other musicians were grand as well. David Coffin has really blossomed as he's taken over John Langstaff's role as songleader and general master of ceremonies. I love his voice, and he has a great rapport with the audience and a warm smile. Even when I nearly crashed into him during "Lord of the Dance"!
It was a brighter Revels than some years. Often, there's a note of darkness in the show, preparing for the rebirth of light, but even the mummer's play in this one seemed pretty much entirely comedic.
greenlily and I have both been in Revels in the past, so we know the traditions, not to mention the final descant for the Sussex Mummers' Carol, which we both belted out as lustily as we could on a high B flat. The people sitting around us gave us lots of compliments afterwards, which is nice.
Revels is a neat thing. I'd like to do it again some day, though lord knows it does swallow December.
