Weekend update.

I had a really good time at Legends this weekend. I got to bring back my old character briefly (those of you who play and don't know what happened... find out in game. ;) ), and had some good plot with the new one. There were wrinkles, and things that didn't go as smoothly as they could, but overall it was a good time. And [livejournal.com profile] chmrr and [livejournal.com profile] ringrose did something I'm not sure has ever happened in my LARP career before: they brought me to actual tears. Guys, I know I told you so already, but that was an amazing encounter, and I'm immensely glad to have been there to witness it.

The weather was chilly but sunny, which is what October should be like as far as I'm concerned (though it did get colder than I'd prefer at night!). The stars were bright overhead at night, and the sunsets were gorgeous. Beautiful. It was one of those LARP weekends where I came back feeling like I'd been away a lot longer than a weekend; my mind was so far away from everyday junk.

Very brief weekend update.

ToV kicked ass. Glorious, perfect October weather; plot coming out my ears; a compliment on my fighting; a walk through woods by bright moonlight; successful accomplishment of a major goal -- what more could one really ask for in a LARP session?

LARPy bits.

In the tradition of [livejournal.com profile] gnomi's rambly bits, it's LARPy bits -- some random accumulated thoughts after the first two events of the season.

Well, that's done.

Just submitted the character history for my new Legends character. I think she'll be fun to play, though it will be hard not to slip into old habits. (I'm intentionally picking a quite different background and set of skills, to minimize that problem, but I'm sure I'll get confused a few times.)

Now, to costume her...

Brain dump.

Some accumulated brain clutter from the past couple of weeks:

  • California apparently requires very explicit warning signs when smoking is allowed somewhere. My hotel had signs everywhere saying "Smoking is allowed on this floor. Smoking is known to the State of California to cause cancer." There were similar signs warning about chemicals in use in the facility.
  • I am in awe of the teachers I met with in Fresno. They are working in very difficult circumstances (a district that's 80 percent ESL, and in which 70-90% of the students in each high school represented are on free or reduced-price lunch, and where there are few financial resources), and are clearly very dedicated to what they do.
  • I visited King's Canyon and Sequoia National Parks one late afternoon/evening. (They're technically two parks, but they're managed as one park.) I took some photos that I haven't uploaded yet; unfortunately, I didn't get any good shots of the deer I ran into in a couple of places. (It was twilight, and I didn't want to use the flash so as not to frighten them, so it was hard to get clear pics.) The sequoias really are magnificently tall, though they don't have the bulk of the El Tule tree I saw in Oaxaca. It was lovely to get in some mountain time. Admittedly, it's probably rather foolish to go walking around the woods, in a place where there are bears, alone, at twilight, when no one on the planet knows where you are -- but it was good for my spirit anyway.
  • Speaking of bears, I saw one at the ToV site on Sunday afternoon when I was getting my car.
  • If you like a good burger, I recommend the Dog House Grill in Fresno. (Technically in Clovis, the next town over, I think.)
  • Now that I'm out of the knee brace, I desperately need a pedicure. I may wait till the mosquito bites from last weekend fade somewhat, though.
  • Also now that I'm out of the knee brace, I'll finally be able to wear the new sandals I bought! (I have the bronzey-colored ones.)
  • Also also now that I'm out of the knee brace, it's time to get back to the gym.
  • Man, decent-looking LARP armor is expensive. The new character I'm toying with could probably use some, but yikes. I also doubt much of what's out there would fit me (that's what comes from being a plus-size woman with some serious curvature). I particularly like the look of brigandine, but I don't have the money to throw at the good stuff. I may just go with my leather bodice thingy, which would work for leather armor.
  • I should really clean my house.
  • I suppose, even out of the brace, I should probably wait a while before I try tap dancing again. :)
  • I feel very spacy at the moment. Some combination of heat, post-LARPishness, post-travelness, and general lethargy, I suppose.
  • It's nice to be surprised by someone you wouldn't have expected doing something nice for you. Makes you reevaluate your expectations.
  • Memo to self: stay out of ditches and watch your footing. You don't want to do this again.

Also, I realized that not everyone on my friends list reads all my puzzle-geek friends' blogs, and so I should probably actually remind you all about Wordplay. It's a documentary about crossword puzzles and the people who do them -- but don't let that stop you. It's really a very good movie, and portrays a world I'm part of in what to me is a pretty accurate and sympathetic way. Plus, it has high drama (no, really!), fun characters (including Jon Stewart and Bill Clinton!), humor, and cleverness; besides, it's your chance to see me, however briefly, in a feature film! :) It opened in New York last weekend, and opens around the country this coming weekend. Please, go see it -- you'll be glad you did. (In the Boston area, it's playing at the Kendall theater.)

What a weekend.

ToV rocks. That's really all there is to it.

I had a great time this weekend. My knee held up much better than I'd expected, even when I did stupid things like try to run across a field in combat, or trip over someone. I got more exercise than I've had in ages; I guess being a front-line fighter character will do that. I'm still not a very good boffer fighter, but I think I'm improving. I know I landed at least some good blows this weekend, and I certainly had fun trying. I'm so glad I decided to take the chance on not being a noncombatant and letting myself get back into the thick of things even with the brace.

I also get the awesomeness that is having [livejournal.com profile] metagenie and [livejournal.com profile] residualentropy (er, I mean Dr. [livejournal.com profile] residualentropy, congratulations!) running a big chunk of my plot, which is all kinds of cool. And [livejournal.com profile] tenwii and the other barbarians are truly glorious roleplaying partners, and all the staff do such great stuff. [livejournal.com profile] dharklady and [livejournal.com profile] torilgrey, you should be really proud of what you've built.

I'm physically tired but mentally and emotionally much refreshed. Now I need to finish packing, and then go get some sleep before I have to go be professional in Fresno all week.

Successful sewing!

doublet
Originally uploaded by Kath B.

I just finished making this doublet to donate to ToV. I'm rather pleased with the result. I don't do a lot of "real" sewing; most of my own LARP costuming is simple stuff like T-tunics. But this was more substantial. The one thing I didn't do was real buttonholes; I have a 50-year-old black Singer sewing machine that's a treasure, but the buttonholer attachment is a pain to deal with.

Behind the cut is a closeup of the neckline. (Like this photo, it's a bit blurry, because I took the photos with no flash -- the flash was too shiny bouncing off the velvet.)

Closeup. )

I like having well-dressed NPCs. I hope this works out well.

Weekend update, and so on.

Conclusions from the weekend:

  • LARPing in a knee brace (or "robo-knee" as [livejournal.com profile] torilgrey called it) is rough. I couldn't get involved in a lot of things because I couldn't get into combat, walk out in the woods on rough terrain much, and so on. I apologize to anyone I griped at about it, but it was frustrating (and occasionally painful if I stumbled, or when I'd been on my feet too long.) I had planned to give MJ a second try this coming weekend, but I just don't think it's a good idea. Going to ToV in a few weeks and being able to participate more fully is more important to me, and I need to give this thing time to heal. People were really nice about walking me places, finding me chairs, and so on, though.
  • Politics plot is okay in small doses.
  • I shouldn't stay up late on the Sunday nights after LARPing. Sleepy today.
  • Once in a while, Massachusetts gets Midwestern-style thunderstorms that come up out of nowhere, suddenly develop pouring rain and hail, and are replaced by bright sunshine within ten minutes. Cool, but weird.

Now, back to work. Much to do on a fairly tight deadline.

A challenge to artists.

I want a "larper grrl" icon. :)

(As I was discussing with [livejournal.com profile] leighjen once, I think there could be a cool T-shirt in that idea, too, showing a bunch of women in various LARPy costumes and poses. But I can't draw worth crap, so someone else'll have to do it.)

Wish list

My wish list for Legends stuff between now and next spring:

  • Dark-colored shirts whose sleeves are actually long enough.
  • Bracers.
  • Suede or fake suede bodice that can count as armor.
  • New skirts that don't snag on all the brambles.
  • Better footwear. Preferably spiffy-looking, but essentially comfortable and waterproof.
  • Better pouches.
  • Better way to carry sword.
  • Get in shape, dammit!

Just so you know. :)

One truly kickass event.

Last Legends event of the season was this past weekend, and good god but it kicked ass. Mine, more often than I'd like, but I still had enormous amounts of fun.

Dying twice was bad... you only get so many deaths before it's permanent. So I need to start being careful from here on in. But I have plot! Yay for plot! And I have a nifty item that I hope turns out to do something cool. And I have Things To Do. And I got three undead critters to run away from me. (I know, I know, this all makes no sense if you don't do these sorts of silly games. But trust me, it was very cool.)

Now I just have to get rid of this wretched cough. I'm staying home from the office today so I don't alarm everyone with my hacking.

Bravery

In my real life, I have trouble standing up for myself, and trouble being courageous, generally.

Why is it that it's so much easier in character at a LARP? I mouthed off to someone powerful, chewed out someone for his behavior, and went into battle, all during the game. Where's that courage in real life?

Oof. Oogh. Ow.

You know it's been a long LARP weekend when you get to the point where you can hardly move. My legs are incredibly stiff and tired.

More Legends babble later when I'm not exhausted. Now I must go fall over so I can get up and go to my job interview tomorrow! (Yes, I have a job interview tomorrow, didn't I mention?) )

Signs of Legends

Sign that going to the gym is starting to pay off: the big nasty hill on the Legends site didn't seem so bad this time.

Sign that boffer practice is starting to pay off: in a big fight with a nasty critter, I hit it at least once and managed not to get hit myself. And I managed not to die.

Sign that I've been playing Legends for a little while: there was plot for me to get involved in. And people recognized me and talked to me.

Sign that there's a ways to go yet: very little to do on Saturday during the day. Then again, it seemed quiet for everyone.

Sign that Legends attracts good people: several of the members of the "Black Watch," a much-admired group, just graduated from high school. Where they were football stars, of all things. One of them was saying after the game ended, while we were doing cleanup, that it had been hard, hiding their gaming habits from their other friends. How refreshing to find young men who have such diverse interests and who are just plain nice. I may have to revise my default opinion of high school jocks now.

Sign that it was a good weekend: I'm tired, stiff, and bruised (from dropping to the ground after being hit, mostly), but happy anyway.

Memos to self.

(1) Don't have boffer practice with someone whose boffer isn't quite up to code.

(2) When you have a banged-up spot by your eye, don't rub your eyes.

(I took a boff to the glasses from someone who needed to fix the tip of his sword on Tuesday, and wound up with a red sort of stripe below my right eyebrow. Sheesh. Not sore particularly, except when I accidentally rub it.)

Legends recap

Wow. I am so tired, and I have enough mosquito bites to have fed a battalion. But I had a great time, definitely better than the last time.

I'm going to go over the weekend at length, partially so any of you who might care can read it, but mostly so I get it down before I forget anything. That way I can use this entry later as a reference for writing my official post-game letter. I should warn you, it's pretty choppy writing. (Bad editor! No biscuit!)

Legends babble. )

A good day.

This has been a pretty good day, all told. I didn't get enough done, but:

  • My new bodice for Legends (or anything else I decide to use it for!) came. No pics of me in it yet, but it's this one in forest green. Maybe should've gotten a size up; it's pretty darn snug. I mean, I know they're supposed to be snug, but breathing is good too...

  • I got feedback on the first batch of math problems I wrote for my current freelance project. There were a few little things to fix, but the e-mail began: "Thank you for the terrific manuscript. We are very happy with the items." This makes me happy, especially because they're paying me $30 a page, and a page only has a few problems on it, so it's quick money.

  • I found out I got cast in the MIT Community Players' summer show. This is the first time I've even auditioned for non-musical theater since about ninth grade (well, there was that one SCA play in grad school, but that hardly counted). The show is a set of five short one-acts. I'm playing a small role in one of them. So not a huge thing, but I'm glad to be part of it. And it's a great little play, called "The Perfect Thing," about a guy who wakes up one day to discover that he can say exactly the right thing to get anyone's attention. I know the author from the National Puzzlers' League, which makes it even more fun.

So now I just need to get some more work done, and it'll be an even better day.
