Review and look ahead.

I haven't been writing much of any substance in my LJ in recent times. I'm not altogether sure why that is, but it is. So it's taken me a little longer to get around to year-in-review and looking-ahead posts... but here they are.
2008 began spectacularly, with the trip to the Galapagos. I hope to do a lot more travel in my life, but it will be hard to top that one. I realized I never wrote a proper tale of the trip, and maybe that's something I should do now.
The rest of the year was ... kind of ordinary, I guess.
Work was busy, stressful, and sometimes frustrating. I don't want to go into a lot of specifics in a public post, but I am glad to have finally gotten back to actual editing later in the year, after 18 months of planning. When I get to be creative with it, it's still fun. When I'm waiting around for other people to do stuff, it's not so much fun.
I don't know that educational publishing is what I want to do for the rest of my life, but I'm not sure what I would want to do. For now, it will do.
Three shows this year: Brigadoon, the T@F one-acts, and PMRP's "Tomes of Terror III." It was good to do more singing; I haven't done enough of that lately. The show itself had a lot of frustrations (right,
desireearmfeldt?) but it was fun to do a classic show I've always liked. The one-acts were silly and nicely low-key (at least mine was), and Tomes was a cool new experience. I'm very envious of the PMRP people who got to perform at the Orpheum on First Night!
Mixed. The year started very well, with lots of exercise and some results showing from it. I was much less good about exercise in the fall, except for the dance class I took. I need to get myself going again this year.
What a year! ToV continued to rock my world, as it has from the beginning. The two fall events were among the busiest LARP events I can remember. The effort put into advancing my plots was much, much appreciated. And I beat
metagenie,
willtruncheon, and
dharklady in one-on-one fights -- how cool is that?
I played my last game of Legends as a player, after being invited to go on staff. It'll be interesting to try my hand at writing plot.
But the big LARP story of the year was Prophecy. While I started playing in 2007, I really became part of the Prophecy world and community in 2008. I am continually amazed by the creativity of the staff and players, and the sense of community that the game has. I'm so glad I was dragged into playing, and I'm already obsessing over my P3 character! And I'm glad I convinced
dcltdw to play too. :)
In other gaming stuff, I started playing in a moderately regular tabletop group with
dcltdw and two of his friends. It's coming up on my turn to run a session, which utterly terrifies me given how good the other three are!
It was a quiet year on the puzzle front for me. I participated in the Mystery Hunt, but split the weekend with several other activities. I find I'm just not as gaga over the Hunt as I once was, and as a lot of other people are. I still enjoy it, but not the Big Deal it has become to organize and do.
I had one of my poorer performances at the ACPT. I was coming down with a raging cold at the time, but that's not really an excuse for making a dumb mistake on puzzle 7 that cost me the New England title and the top 10.
The NPL Con was in Denver, and
tmcay put on a a bang-up show. I had fun introducing my mom to the Krewe. The side trip I organized to Rocky Mountain National Park proved a little more adventurous than I'd intended when one car got in an accident and the absence of cell phone service meant that we didn't know what was going on, but everyone came back ok and I think people enjoyed it.
saphir23 and I cosolved the Enigma, though somewhat sporadically. It's good to be back into the solving routine.
My dad got married in June, to his partner of several years. It was a fun occasion. I'm slowly getting used to using the words "stepmother," "stepbrother," and "stepsister."
My grandmother is in a nursing home, with basically no short-term memory and increasing dementia. Fortunately, she doesn't seem particularly distressed or in pain, and is well cared for.
I did a massive costuming project for Prophecy, which was insane but a lot of fun too. I did some smaller bits of LARP costuming too.
I got a stand mixer for Christmas, which will increase my cooking creativity in 2009, I think. :) I need to find an outlet for my cooking, or I'm going to weigh 500 pounds!
Mixed bag. Depression is still my demon, and still rears its ugly head. I often don't make the effort to be social, because it's easier to give in to the grayness and stay home and goof off on the computer.
But when I did make the effort, it was a good year socially. I made a bunch of new acquaintances, mostly via Prophecy and T@F/PMRP, and reconnected with people I'd lost touch with. I made deeper connections with some folks (hi,
hahathor and
dcltdw) and had a lot of fun along the way.
So here are some goals for 2009.
1. Exercise regularly. If my knees allow, run a 5K. (I've started the "Couch-to-5K" training plan, aiming toward a 5K in Davis Square in March.)
2. Think about what I might want to do with the rest of my life, careerwise. Do I want to go to library school and be an archivist? Work in a museum? Go back to freelancing? Write?
3. Do hands-on creative things -- crafting, cooking, photography, and so on.
4. Find theater to do. Preferably musical.
5. Do some kind of volunteering. I need to do something for others.
6. Write. Plots for Legends and the tabletop group, for one thing. Gain confidence in my writing, to the extent that I actually do it instead of just thinking about it. Construct some puzzles.
7. Make the effort required to be social. Accept invitations. Offer invitations! Maintain my friendships better.
8. Put in a better showing at the ACPT. My stepsister is threatening to come watch the finals. I can't resolve to be in the finals, because there's a lot that goes into that that's out of my control, but I'd like to not make dumb mistakes this time!
9. Take better care of my appearance. Maybe wear makeup more often. Don't let my hair get shaggy and messy.

Date: 2009-01-03 12:55 am (UTC)Well, if you are thinking about going the MLS route, here's one route you might want to consider:
University of North Texas Distance Learning Program in Library Science (Virginia Cohort starting in fall 2010 is probably your best bet). Not sure how well that would work for the archivist route, but it's a thought.
I'm waiting for them to do another Minnesota cohort so I can jump on that bandwagon myself. My sister would have enrolled in one three years ago (when I first told her about), if she could afford to. (She's handling interlibrary loan at the Colorado School of Mines these days, by the way.)
I worry that the museum job market isn't going to be great the next few years, because of the state of the economy.
Is there a Couch-to-Bike plan for those of us recovering from cartilage damage in the knees? I have never been and never will be a runner, but I'd like to start using my two-wheeler again...
